This rating is more important than many people think. A lamp or LED strip that works perfectly in a dry living room is not automatically suitable for a bathroom, canopy, or garden. By choosing the correct IP rating, you prevent problems and can better determine if a product fits your situation.

What does an IP rating mean?

IP stands for Ingress Protection. This designation is usually followed by two digits.

  • The first digit indicates protection against solids, such as dust.

  • The second digit indicates protection against water or moisture.

The higher the numbers, the better the product is usually protected against external influences.

For many customers, the second part is especially important: how well can the product withstand moisture, rain, or water?

Why is the correct IP rating important?

Not every space has the same requirements for lighting. In a bedroom or living room, basic protection is usually sufficient. In a bathroom, garden, or on an exterior wall, lighting must be much more resistant to moisture, condensation, or rain.

Choosing too low an IP rating can lead to problems in the long run. This could include reduced lifespan, malfunctions, or lighting that simply turns out to be unsuitable for the environment in which you want to use it.

Therefore, it is wise to not only consider the model or light color beforehand, but also the degree of protection.

IP20: suitable for dry indoor spaces

IP20 is a common protection rating for indoor lighting. This rating is usually suitable for dry areas where there is no moisture or splashing water.

For example, consider:

  • cabinet lighting

  • niche lighting

  • decorative indoor lighting

For these types of applications, IP20 is often perfectly fine. You don't need heavy moisture protection here.

IP44: for splash water and slightly humid applications

IP44 is suitable for environments where a product may come into contact with splash water. This makes this class more interesting for certain places where there is more moisture than in a normal living area.

Consider:

The latter is important: with IP68, you should always also check the product specifications themselves. The code indicates that the product is extra well protected, but not automatically how deep or how long it can remain submerged.

IP68 is especially interesting for:

  • heavy outdoor conditions

  • applications with significant moisture exposure

  • situations where standard outdoor protection is insufficient

  • specialized applications

For a normal garden lamp or standard façade spot, IP68 is usually not necessary, but for heavier applications, it can be relevant.

IP69 and IP69K: for very harsh conditions

IP69 and especially IP69K are found in products designed for truly harsh conditions. This includes situations where not only moisture, but also powerful water jets or intensive cleaning play a role.

This class is particularly interesting for:

  • industrial applications

  • professional environments

  • installations that are intensively cleaned

  • situations involving high pressure or heavy water exposure

For normal residential projects, garden lighting, or a standard canopy, IP69K is usually not necessary. However, for specialized or professional applications, this might be the right choice.

Do you always need the highest IP rating?

No, absolutely not. That is a common misconception.

A higher IP rating does not automatically mean a product is better for every situation. The point is that the protection matches the application.

A few examples:

  • For a dry living room, IP20 is often more than sufficient.

  • For a bathroom or sheltered damp area, IP44 may be logical.

  • For many standard outdoor lighting applications, IP65 is an excellent choice.

  • For heavy humid conditions, IP68 can be interesting.

  • For professional or industrial use with intensive cleaning, IP69K can be relevant.

The right choice is therefore not necessarily the highest value, but the most appropriate value.

Don't forget the rest of the installation

An important point that is often overlooked: it's not just about the lamp or LED strip itself.

These components must also be suitable for the environment:

  • power supplies

  • connectors

  • connection points

  • dimmers

  • controllers

  • cable connections

You can have an LED strip with a high IP rating, but if the rest of the installation is insufficiently protected, that still remains a weak link.

Practical rule of thumb

To make it easy, you can roughly follow this:

  • IP20: dry indoor spaces

  • IP44: splash water or slightly humid applications

  • IP65: many standard outdoor lighting

  • IP68: heavy moisture exposure or submersion, depending on specification

  • IP69 / IP69K: very harsh conditions, high pressure or intensive cleaning
