LED neon flex or LED strip: what's the difference and which one should you choose?
LED neon flex and LED strips both use LEDs on a flexible circuit board, but the final light output and mounting are different. Neon flex is enclosed in a continuous light-transmitting jacket. This creates a clean line without clearly visible light points. A regular LED strip is thinner and can be mounted openly, water-resistant, or in an aluminum profile.
Short answer: choose LED neon flex when the light line itself may be visible and needs to appear uniform, for example for contours, letters, and decorative lines. Choose a regular LED strip when you want to build compactly, need a wide choice in light output or color, or want to diffuse light indirectly via a profile.
What is LED neon flex?
LED neon flex consists of a flexible LED strip enclosed by a diffusing silicone or plastic jacket. This jacket protects the LEDs and blends the light into a virtually continuous line. The effect resembles traditional neon, but the light source consists of LEDs.
The outer dimension, bending direction, and minimum bending radius differ per model. Some variants bend mainly sideways, others in the direction of the light surface. This needs to be checked before designing letters, corners, or contours.
What is a regular LED strip?
A standard LED strip has visible LED chips on a flexible circuit board. When viewed directly, the individual light points may be visible. In an aluminum profile with a frosted cover, the light becomes more uniform, and the strip is mechanically better protected.
A COB strip forms an intermediate form: due to the large number of closely spaced light points, a much more uniform line is created, while the strip remains more compact than neon flex.
Difference in light output
Neon flex is designed to be used as a visible light line. The jacket diffuses the light and hides the individual LEDs. This works well for logos, wall lines, bar lighting, stair treads, facade contours, and decorative shapes.
A regular LED strip is often intended to illuminate a surface. Think of light under a cabinet, in a coving, behind a television, or in a profile. When the strip itself remains out of sight, individual LED points are usually not a problem.
Difference in bending and corners
An LED strip bends mainly in the plane for which it is designed. Sharp kinks can damage copper tracks and components. Neon flex, due to its thicker jacket, usually has a larger minimum bending radius and a fixed bending direction.
Do not try to bend neon flex in the wrong direction. For a design with many right angles, a strip with corner connectors can be more practical. For smooth curves and continuous contours, neon flex gives a more beautiful result.
Cuttable, but only at the cut marks
Both systems may only be cut at indicated cut marks. The distance between these points varies per product. Therefore, check before purchasing whether the segment length matches the size of the project.
After cutting neon flex, a suitable connection and end cap are required. For outdoor use, the cut end must be properly re-sealed. Use components that belong to exactly the same size and version.
12V or 24V?
Both LED strips and neon flex are available in 12V and 24V. At the same power, less current flows at 24V. This can be advantageous for voltage drop and cable load over longer distances. However, the maximum length remains dependent on power per meter, circuit board design, and connection method.
Power supply, dimmer, and controller must all use the same voltage. A 12V product should not be connected to a 24V power supply.
Calculating power supply
Multiply the power per meter by the length used. A five-meter section with 10 watts per meter uses 50 watts. Choose a suitable power supply with sufficient reserve so that it does not continuously operate at maximum load.
For RGB or other multi-color versions, the controller must also be able to handle sufficient current per channel and in total.
Mounting neon flex
Neon flex is usually installed with mounting clips or a suitable profile. Use enough mounting points to prevent sagging, but do not clamp the jacket so tightly that it deforms. Allow space for the connection and end cap.
First, create a test setup. A line that bends well on a table may turn out differently against a wall due to the chosen direction.
Mounting an LED strip
An LED strip often has self-adhesive tape, but the surface must be clean, dry, and grease-free. For a durable installation and better heat dissipation, an aluminum profile is often the better base. A cover protects the strip and softens the light.
Indoor and outdoor use
For outdoor use, check the IP rating of the complete product. Not only the light line, but also the power supply, connector, cable connection, end cap, and controller must match the environment. A water-resistant jacket does not make an open end waterproof.
Place a power supply in an accessible and suitable location. Prevent water from running along the cable to a connection.
When to choose neon flex?
- the light line remains directly visible;
- you want a uniform neon-like effect;
- you create flowing contours, shapes, or letters;
- the more robust jacket suits the application;
- the available bending direction matches the design.
When to choose a regular LED strip?
- the lighting is installed compactly;
- the strip is placed in an aluminum profile or coving;
- you want a wide choice in brightness, LED type, or color control;
- you use corner, T, or cable connectors;
- the lighting is primarily intended to illuminate a surface.
Practical check before purchase
- Draw the complete route and measure the length.
- Determine if the light source remains visible.
- Check bending direction and minimum bend.
- Check cut length and outer dimension.
- Choose 12V or 24V and calculate the power supply.
- Order suitable connectors, end caps, and mounting clips.
- Plan the location of the power supply and controller.
